Least Invasive First
“Do no harm.”
-Hippocrates
Upon making a clinical diagnosis, it is then necessary to decide on a treatment plan. As a general rule, treatments that hold the least amount of risk to the patient are preferred. While no treatment is completely free of all risk (even aspirin can have side effects), it is our practice to try to begin minimally, in some cases with a simple medication or perhaps with careful physical therapy, depending on the problem. Often times, these initial interventions are successful and nothing more is needed. However, in those cases where physical therapy and/or medications fail to provide the desired relief, the next step might include injection treatments of one type or another. If that does not prove to be satisfactory, perhaps a more invasive treatment will need to be tried. Ultimately, when all other conservative treatments are tried without success, surgery is sometimes suggested, usually as a last resort. In this way, it is best to work in a stepwise fashion up the ladder of least invasive to more invasive treatments.
